Dunes West Continues Preparation for Hurricane Irma
Hurricane Irma has been downgraded to a category 4 hurricane, and the National Hurricane Center has adjusted its projected course slightly westward. Nonetheless, it remains a dangerous hurricane with the potential to impact our area with wind effects and storm surge. Accordingly, residents are urged to continue with their storm preparations, such as securing anything that could become a wind-driven projectile, and preparing for evacuation if ordered. In that regard, Governor McMaster stated that with the recent change in course of the storm, he was waiting to review the 5:00 p.m. update data before making a decision on his pending evacuation order. The governor indicated that his decision will be announced at approximately 6:00 p.m. today, but the evacuation order would be implemented at 10:00 a.m., tomorrow (Saturday) if the order is given. Residents are urged to continue to monitor local news sources, to include the Dunes West Emergency Operations Team (DWEOT) website, www.dw-safety.com , for the latest information on Irma and the status of the pending evacuation order.
As of 2:00 p.m., Dunes West, as well as the rest of Charleston County, moved to OPCON Level 2. This means that the Charleston County Emergency Operations Center is now fully operational. All residents are urged to continue their personal hurricane and family communications plans, and especially become familiar with current evacuation routes/procedures, which can also be found on links on the DWEOT website, www.dw-safety.com.
The POA and its Emergency Operations Team are continuing to monitor the situation, and will provide updates as information becomes available. As part of this, the POA is taking certain actions, in accordance with its Hurricane Plan, to safeguard POA assets and infrastructure. This will include such things as test-running of backup generators and chain saws, turning off all pond fountains and bubblers, securing trash cans, etc. We have also advised Pulte of those areas where unsecured building supplies need to be secured. In addition, arrangements for contractor assistance, if needed, with road clearing/tree removal have been finalized.
Additional information will be promulgated as it becomes available.
